An Array of Child Heroes, 1841

Comments - Fantastic Kuniyoshi triptych featuring portraits of 36 Japanese heroes as young boys. Each figure is accompanied by a cartouche bearing the child's name and his adult name. At the bottom of the center panel, Oniwaka-maru (Musashi-bo Benkei) sits at a low writing desk, the tip of his brush held to his lips, Buddhist prayer wheels visible on his sleeves. Directly above him, Taira no Tomoakira, the son of Tomomori, wears a blue robe with the Taira butterfly crest over his suit of armor. In the center of the right panel, Minamoto no Yoritomo holds a black fan with a red sun on it. A terrific image with wonderful individual detail in the figures.
