Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Theater Performance

Series; Women's Activities of the Tokugawa Era

Theater Performance - Intriguing image of upper-class ladies watching a kabuki theater performance from behind a fine reed blind, although the women don't seem to be paying much attention to the actors. In the center, a beauty sits on a cushion with one hand atop a black lacquer armrest. She chats with her companion at right, who bows respectfully. At left, a young girl carries in a tray piled high with colorful sweets, much to the delight of the kneeling woman beside her, who smiles happily at her. Beautiful color and pattern in the kimono fabrics, with burnishing on the hair and black kimono, and embossing on the white kimono collars and trim. An elegant design.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 28"

Condition - This print with excellent color as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Tear and thinning at edge, repaired. Crease at corner. Please see photos for details.
