Kyoto: The Imperial Palace by Hiroshige II (1826 - 1869)

Original Hiroshige II (1826 - 1869) Japanese Woodblock Print
Kyoto: The Imperial Palace

Series; The Tokaido, 1863 - 1867

The Tokaido - Handsome design from Hiroshige II's chuban size Tokaido series commemorating the journey of the Shogun from Edo to Kyoto in 1863 to pay his respects to the Emperor. The Shogun's power was in decline at the time, and the procession had not been made for many years, so this was an important event. Hiroshige II shows the procession traveling through the countryside with standard bearers and retainers dressed in matching attire, making their way across bridges or past beautiful natural features such as mountains and rushing rivers. An attractive series memorializing this historic procession, with nice detail and color.

Image Size - 8 3/4" x 6 3/8" + margins as shown
