Monks at a Bathhouse, 1855 by Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Monks at a Bathhouse, 1855

Comments - Unusual comic kabuki scene of monks at a bathhouse. At left, a man looks up with a strange grimace as he holds a parcel wrapped in green cloth in one hand, a string of prayer beads around his neck. In the center, a monk perched atop another monk on a companion's shoulders uses two long poles topped with dragon's heads to scratch the belly of a cat lolling on the floor. At lower right, a fellow sitting beside a tobacco set waves a pipe above his head. Shoji windows behind the figures are surrounded by elegant black lacquer frames. A strange design with expressive figures and a nicely detailed interior setting.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 28 1/2"

Condition - This print with nice detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Vertical folds at sides, very slight rubbing. Please see photos for details.
