Maple Viewing Outing, 1894

Comments - Attractive kabuki scene featuring a group of beauties on an outing to view the colorful maple trees. The woman at right strikes a pose with a folding fan and one sleeve raised, looking back with a strange grimace at her companion. The beauty in the center eyes her with a slight smile as she displays her own fan above her head. At upper left, an attendant holds a tray with a poem slip on it while the woman before him seems somewhat alarmed, throwing her hand out before her. At upper right, a cloth panel hung from a rope provides privacy for the women, the tree next to it enclosed with a low fence. Nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair and metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the clusters of flowers adorning the women's hair.

Artist - Kunisada III (1848 - 1920)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 27 1/4"

Condition - This print with nice color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Vertical centerfold in center panel. A few small repairs and creases, a couple spots, stain on beauty's face. Please see photos for details.
