Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of actors representing the famous Six Jewel Rivers in a dance called "A Parody of the Six Immortal Poets." At left, Iwa Kumesaburo III portrays a kneeling beauty holding a sword upright for the Ide Jewel River in Yamashiro. In the center, Sawamura Chojuro V is shown as the courtier dressed in an elegant tunic and black court cap, perhaps as Ariwara no Narihira. At right, Onoe Baiko IV pounds laundry with mortar in a large wooden pestle for the Chofu Jewel River in Musashi. The cloth stage backdrop features a flowing river with gently undulating water, the grassy banks framed by yellow blossoms and a colorful maple tree at right. A charming subject, nicely colored and detailed.
