Comments - Terrific scene of kabuki actors offstage enjoying the cool of the evening in a room overlooking the water. In the center, a beauty holds up a large painting with calligraphy and a minogame or straw raincoat turtle, the long moss growing from its shell an auspicious symbol of longevity. A man sitting below holds a small blue and white cup of sake, a slightly worried expression on his face. At lower left, a red lacquer tray on the floor holds large bowls of food. At lower right, a fellow looks up with a brush in hand, having just painted the folding fan held by his companion at right. Red paper lanterns hang overhead. The actors include Ichikawa Komazo VII, Ichikawa Kuzo II, Ichikawa Danjuro VIII; Ichikawa Saruzo I, Fujikawa Kayu III, Nakamura Kantaro I (?), Ichimura Takenojo V; Bando Shuka I, Ichikawa Komazo VII (?), Arashi Kichisaburo III. A great depiction of actors in their spare time, wonderfully detailed. The first time we've seen this subject.
