Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Wada Yoshimori's Feast at Oiso, circa 1842 - 1843

Comments - Terrific triptych from the famous tale of the Soga Brothers, who grew up to avenge their father's death. Here, the younger brother Goro, wearing his trademark butterfly print kimono under his armor, waits outside a palace in Oiso where Wada Yoshimori is hosting a banquet. Goro is keeping an eye on his older brother Juro, who is inside with his beloved courtesan Tora, who has been requested to serve Wada during the party. At far right, Juro raises his glass of sake for a toast, while at bottom center, the strongman Asahina Saburo Yoshihide discovers Goro waiting outside, gesturing towards him with his fan. Goro grips his sword, his muscles tensed and ready to leap into action to defend his brother. A great subject from this classic tale with expressive figures and a nicely detailed setting.
