Utagawa and Nanasato of the Yotsuba House - Handsome diptych of the Yoshiwara courtesans Utagawa and Nanasato of the Yotsuba House in their private quarters. The standing beauty at left writes a New Year's greeting on a poem slip as her attendant holds a tray with ink. Her elegant kimono features scenes from the Tale of Genji, while her white under robe has an embossed geometric pattern. The other beauty is engrossed in reading a letter. A charming scene with the verses above reproducing the women's handwriting. Elegant detail and color in this intimate view of life in the Yoshiwara.
