Comments - Striking kabuki scene of an artist sitting back to admire a painting of the Buddhist deity Fudo Myoo. He looks up as he leans back on one hand, his black outer kimono trailing on the floor behind him. At right, the painting is propped up against a folding screen with a rushing waterfall, brushes, an ink stone, and a dish of water on the floor nearby. At right, a vase decorated with bats holds a single white peony. Only the second time we've seen this handsome and unusual Kunichika triptych. Nicely detailed with burnishing on the black kimono and the black lacquer frame of the screen.
