Scene from Kanete kikuoie no bakemono, 1838

Comments - Dramating scene from the kabuki play "Kanete kikuoie no bakemono," 1838 at the Nakamura Theater, a drama about the young woman Kasane who becomes horribly disfigured by the jealous spirit of the dead Okuni. At left, Kinoshita Yoemon attacks the now vengeful Kasane with a sickle, grabbing her by the hair as he raises the weapon above his head while climbing through the brush. Kasane has hold of one end of the geisha Kosan's obi, pulling on it as the geisha smiles slyly as she twists backwards. She wears a boldly patterned tie-dyed kimono, he hair pulled back into a smooth bun adorned with a comb and hairpins. A willow tree frames the night sky above. The actors are Onoe Kikugoro III as Yoemon and Onoe Kikuguro II as Kosan. An interesting subject.
