Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play "Ami moyo toro no kikukiri" at the Ichimura Theater of two commoners pausing at the foot of a bridge. At left, the thief Kozaru (Little Monkey) Shichinosuke holds a woman's silver hairpin that his has just stolen from the beautiful maid Takigawa, frowning unhappily as he looks up. At right, the sake shop clerk Yoshiro is left holding the sleeve of the man who had stolen his master's wallet filled with money. The wallet had been in Yoshiro's care and went missing when he fell asleep during a ferry ride. After confronting the pickpocket Shichigoro, the wallet fell out of the man's hat and he quickly picked it up and ran off with it. Desperate after losing his boss's money, Yoshiro plans to commit suicide but vows to return from the grave to bring Shichigoro to justice. A few boats are anchored in the water for the evening, with the buildings and bamboo yards on the opposite shore in darkness beneath the night sky. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Kodanji IV and Bando Hikosaburo V. A handsome design with expressive faces and fine bokashi shading in the background.
