Comments - Interesting scene of passengers on a ferry in winter. In the center, two women hold umbrellas against the falling snow, the crouching beauty wearing a brown hood over her head. At right, a komuso or wandering monk chats with a commoner, lifting his deep basket hat to look at the potted pheasant's eye plant held by his companion. The fukujuso or pheasant's eye plant blooms around the New Year, and is considered a symbol of wealth and good fortune. At left, a laborer holds his hands together under his sleeves, a yoke resting across his lap with the bucket at right holding rows of cups. At upper left, the ferry going the opposite direction sets off across the river. A charming design, wonderfully detailed. The first time we've seen this subject.
