Otokodate Arguing, 1874

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of three otokodate or street knights arguing beneath a blossoming cherry tree. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro as Nozarashi Gohei, Nakamura Shikan as Maboroshi Chobei, and Bando Hikosaburo as Ukiyo Tohei. At left, Gohei turns his head away with a sneer, wearing a blue kimono with an eerie pattern of stylized skulls and bones. In the center, Chobei thrusts his arm out in a stopping motion as Tohei raises a clog above his head, ready to use it as a weapon. Blossoming cherry trees frame the night sky above. A great design with large expressive figures.
