Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from Ura Omote Yanagi no Uchiwae, 1875

Comments - Interesting print featuring two scenes from the kabuki play "Ura Omote Yanagi no Uchiwae," a play about based on the Yanagisawa dispute between the Shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi and his advisor, Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu. At left, a shirabyoshi dancer entertains Tsunayoshi, grinning wildly as she holds a drum in her hand. At right, a samurai raises his sword above, ready to attack, while the older warrior behind him grimaces with rage as he grips his fan with both hands. The actors include Ichikawa Gonjuro as Tsunayoshi and Iwai Hanshiro as the beauty. Nice large expressive figures, detailed with fine line work in the hair.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 28 1/2"

Condition - This print with good color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. A few small marks and creases, light horizontal and vertical lines where backing papers meet. Please see photos for details.
