Bando Hikosaburo V as Dote no Oroku and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Kimon Kihei, 1867

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a couple relaxing. The beauty Dote no Oroku holds a small blue and white sake cup, looking at her companion with an expression of disgust, her mouth slightly agape. At right, Kimon Kihei sits cross-legged holding a short pipe, staring at the woman solemnly. He wears a blue and gray striped kimono tied loosely with a striped obi, a dotted towel draped over his shoulder. From left, the actors are Bando Hikosaburo V and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I. Nice large expressive figures, with soft shading on the background, burnishing on the black kimono collar, and a dusting of mica along the top edge.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 19 1/8"

Condition - This print with nice detail as shown. Two attached panels, backed with paper. Vertical fold between panels, wrinkling at corners. Please see photos for details.
