Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Refined Sake Advertising Print

Comments - Great design advertising refined sake (seishu). Known as hikifuda, advertising handbills or circulars became popular in Japan beginning in the Edo era. Colorful, decorative designs were typically printed with large blank areas for the merchant to add his store name and other information. The text at left features the address of Nishimachi, Sakai, Izumi Province. A lively, colorful image and a terrific subject for a sake enthusiast. The first time we've seen this print.
