Series; Mirror of the Flowering of Manners and Customs, 1878

Mirror of the Flowering of Manners and Customs - Lovely portrait from an 1878 series of contemporary beauties by Kunichika. These attractive designs feature women in a variety of activities from daily life. Some images include the latest modern fashions or imports such as Western umbrellas, while others present more traditional scenes, such as a mother carrying a baby on her back, contrasting the changes taking place in Meiji society. These wonderful woodblocks are beautifully drawn and detailed with fine line work and soft shading, enlivened with vibrant color. A rarely seen series and a terrific modern take on the traditional beauty print.
