Ueno in the Eastern Capital

Comments - Lovely scene of beauties and a young boy enjoying an outing to Ueno Park in Edo. At left, a woman holds out small Daruma doll, the young boy at right spying the toy and running forward eagerly to receive it. His mother leans over him with a fond smile. He wears a miniature version of a black court cap. The beauty in the center smiles happily at her companion as she fans herself. Her kimono features Genji symbols and shells painted with scenes for a popular matching game called kai-awase. A border of clouds separates the figures from a view of the temple buildings and grounds dotted with blossoming cherry trees. The first time we've seen this charming design.
