Series; Famous Views of Modern Tokyo, 1875

Daybreak at Nihonbashi Bridge and Portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro - Handsome design from a collaborative series by various artists depicting scenes around Tokyo. The top image by Kyosai shows Nihonbashi Bridge at daybreak. At left, a man holds a lion dance costume over his shoulder as he chats with a drummer. At right, a nobleman with a cloth wrapped around his face hands an envelope to an excited young boy, likely a New Year's Day gift of money. The title cartouche at upper right is flanked by an octopus and a red fish. Below, the scene by Kunichika features a portrait of the kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro IX in formal dress, wearing a rust colored kamishimo over a black kimono. He looks up over his shoulder as a servant follows behind him carrying a cloth bundle. The background is a red tie-dyed textile pattern. A great design from a rarely seen series, detailed with burnishing in the black kimono.
