Nakamura Shikan IV as Joruri no Kakoya, 1861

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Nakamura Shikan as Joruri no Kakoya, surrounded by supernatural foxfires. He grins as he looks over his shoulder, seemingly unaware that something supernatural is taking place. His boldly patterned blue kimono features white rectangles with floral designs in them, tied with a red and white obi. With one hand he holds a pair of narrow rope draped over his shoulder. The flames dance around his head, flickering against the gray sky as evening falls. An intriguing image.
