Courageous Leaders in Thirty-six Battles

Shirafuji Hikoshichiro, 1851 - 1852 - Great image of the samurai Shirafuji Hikoshichiro confronting his rearing horse on a dike, throwing out his hand in front of him. He wears a suit of armor, his loose hair falling over his shoulders as he leans forward to try to stop the animal. At upper right, Ashikaga Takauji takes refuge in a temple in the countryside. A bold design with a handsome landscape setting, from a rarely seen Kuniyoshi series.
