47 Ronin, Act 1: Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine: The Helmet Inspection

Comments - Handsome triptych depicting a scene from Act 1 of the classic play "Kanadehon Chushingura." Lord Hangan's wife, the lovely Lady Kaoyo, has arrived at the Imperial Palace to identify a fallen samurai's helmet. She kneels at left, holding the helmet in her outstretched hands, a roll of tissues caught between her teeth. Her husband stands behind her dressed in a blue robe. In the center, the evil Lord Moronao, wearing a voluminous black robe and court cap, scowls up at Lord Hangan. At right, Lord Wakasanosuke looks ahead with a slightly worried expression. A handsome design with lively color and large figures, nicely detailed with embossing on the beauty's white kimono collar, burnishing on the black rope, and a burnished pattern on the black court caps.
