Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Kibi Daijin, 1875

Comments - Great portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Kibi Daijin in the kabuki play "Kibi Daijin shina monogatari," based on the life of the historic Minister Kibi, a nobleman who went to China as an ambassador for Japan during the 8th century. Here, his sits at a red table with a lacquer tray holding a message on it, leaning forward with a slight frown. He wears a black robe with a beautiful burnished pattern of wavy bands interspersed with stylized clouds, a tall court cap tied beneath his chin. Mt. Fuji appears in soft gray silhouette behind him. A striking design, nicely detailed with light allover cloth embossing on the background. The first time we've offered this subject.
