Comments - Great image of kabuki actors and their attendants paying visits at New Year's. At left, Ichikawa Kodanji IV bows in greeting to Kawarazaki Gonjuro I. Gonjuro returns the bow, along with the young boy behind him. Two attendants accompany him, one carrying a black lacquer trunk over his shoulder. At right, Sawamuro Tanosuke III smiles happily as he watches the pair, while a beauty beside him hides her mouth with her sleeve, perhaps giggling. At upper left, a traditional holiday decoration of pine and bamboo called a kadomatsu sits next to a wall. An interesting depiction of actors offstage, nicely detailed with burnishing on Ichikawa Kodanji's black kimono, the black trunks, and the scabbards. The first time we've seen this design.
