Scene from Tokaido iroha nikki, 1861

Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "Tokaido iroha nikki" featuring from left, Sawamura Tanosuke III as the younger sister Otani, Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Minezo, and Ichimura Uzaemon XIII as Kato Yomoshichi. The beauty smiles sweetly as she looks at her companion, adjusting her hair with one hand. She wears a black kimono with a colorful geometric pattern over a red under robe. In the center, Minezo stares back at her with a slight frown, a dotted towel draped over his shoulder. At right, Yomoshishi looks up with a sneer, his blue and black outer robe intricately patterned. A row of clouds shaded in purple separates the figures from a view of the mountains at night. A great design with large expressive figures and an atmospheric night landscape. Includes burnishing on the black kimono collar in the center and a dusting of mica across the top of the sky.
