Scene from Tamakushige Akebono Soga, 1863

Comments - Unusual kabuki scene from the play "Tamakushige Akebono Soga" at the Nakamura Theater in Edo of two women standing outside a house at right with a gaping hole in the wall, looking as if it has just been broken with planks of wood and bamboo poles on the ground. At left, the beauty Sankatsu tilts her head to the side with a sly smile as she fastens her obi behind her back. At right, Komurasaki, who is actually the murderer Shirai Gonpachi, lifts her sleeve, turning away with a frown as she grips a sword at her side. From left, the actors are Sawamura Tanosuke III and Bando Hikosaburo V. Nice expressive figures in an interesting setting.
