Bando Hikosaburo V as Sato Yomoshichi, 1861

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Bando Hikosaburo V as Sato Yomoshichi in the play "Tokaido Yotsuya Kaidan" one of Japan's most famous ghost stories, at the Nakamura Theater in Edo. Here, he looks back over his shoulder furtively as he lifts the top of a wooden sluice gate. He wears a white summer kimono with a bold geometric pattern in gray and deep blue, a pale blue towel wrapped about his neck. Reeds grow in the water around him. A nice composition, detailed with faint cloth embossing on the towel.
