Iwai Kumesaburo III as Oboshi Rikiya and Sawamura Chojuro V as Oboshi Yuranosuke, 1849

Comments - Handsome double portrait from Act 7 of the classic drama about the 47 ronin, "Kanadehon Chushingura." Oboshi Yuranosuke, the leader of the ronin, has been pretending to lead a dissolute life to make Moronao believe that he is not plotting revenge for Lord Hangan's death. Here, his son, Rikiya, hands him a black lacquer document box containing a secret message about the vendetta. The young man looks furtively over his shoulder as Yuranosuke hides the box up his sleeve. From left, the actors are Iwai Kumesaburo III and Sawamura Chojuro V. Nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair, and soft bokashi shading and strong wood grain impression in the background.
