Scene from Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura, 1853

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the play "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura" of Shizuka gozen gripping a sword in one hand and a drum in the other. In the drama, a magic fox disguises himself as Yoshitsune's loyal retainer Tadanobu in an effort to retrieve a drum that the samurai had given to his sweetheart, Lady Shizuka. Here, the fox has just revealed his animal nature, and the beauty looks up with a strange grin, ready to attack the creature. She wears kimono patterned with cherry blossoms, her hair arranged in a smooth bun adorned with a red lacquer comb, clusters of blue flowers, and ribbons. A flowering cherry tree frames the night sky above. An attractive design from this popular play.
