Scene from Zen-Taiheiki Magai no Gyokuden, 1890

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene from the play "Zen-Taiheiki Magai no Gyokuden" of Ichikawa Sadanji as Taira no Masakado shooting down a pair of geese with a glance, a demonstration of his incredible power at his peak. He stands in the center, his sleeve raised above his head as he glares into the evening sky and the birds fall towards the sea. A nobleman sits beside him, frowning as he watches, a fan in hand, while two beauties stand quietly at right. Masakado's robe is patterned with clouds and dragons, and he wears a red cap tied under his beard with a green cord. Misty clouds drift past the full moon and a few boats can be seen on the water. A handsome design with wonderful fine line work in the hairstyles and a burnished pattern on the black cap.
