New Year Visits in the Modern World, 1847 - 1848

Comments - Terrific triptych of a busy street crowded with pedestrians during the New Year celebration as they make their way to pay holiday visits. At lower right, a beauty chooses a blossoming plant in a porcelain pot from a vender, while above her musicians perform on flute and drum. Two women play a game of battledore and shuttlecock, a traditional New Year's activity for girls and women. In the left panel, a bent old man shuffles along with a cane while the young man behind him carries a kite. A wonderful scene full of energy and activity, with expressive faces and details. A charming look at life in old Edo.
