Scene from Tenmangu Wakaba no Goaijju, 1846

Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Tenmangu Wakaba no Goaijju" at the Kawarazaki Theater. In the center, the samurai Toneri Sakuramaru stares at his wife Yae with a sullen expression, a few loose wisps of hair giving him a slightly disheveled expression. The beauty looks back at him with a grin as she pats her hair with one hand. She wears a kimono patterned with flowing water and cherry blossoms over a tie-dyed under robe with wide bands of red, green, blue, and yellow. At right, a gray-haired man holds a dirk on a tray, suggesting that Sakuramaru may be about to commit suicide, holding a cloth to his face with an anguished expression as he turns his head away. The actors include Ichikawa Shinsha I as Yae and Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Sakuramaru. Nice expressive figures against a softly shaded background.
