Scene from Kumoi no Hana Masago no Shiranami, 1831

Comments - Great kabuki scene from the play "Kumoi no Hana Masago no Shiranami" at the Nakamura Theater, a drama about the otokodate or street knight Danshichi Kurobei, who kills his father-in-law during an argument. Here, his fellow street knight Issun Tokubei has grabbed the end of Danshichi's wife Okaji's black obi, the beauty turning away as she tries to free herself from his grip. Danshichi emerges between the checked curtains at right, enraged at Tokubei's behavior. He grimaces angrily, gripping his sword by the scabbard. From left, the actors are Nakamura Utaroku, Mimasu Gennosuke I, and Nakamura Shikan II. A handsome design with a nicely detailed interior setting and expressive figures.
