From an untitled series of half-length actor portraits on battledores
Nakamura Shikan as Ishikawa Goemin, 1862 - Terrific kabuki portrait of Nakamura Shikan as the robber Ishikawa Goemin from an untitled Toyokuni III series featuring actors on battledores. He stares over his shoulder with an angry, tight-lipped frown as he pushes up his sleeve. A heavy robe is draped over the shoulders of his furry black kimono, which is subtly burnished. His shorter hair sticks out atop his head, with his longer locks pulled back into a topknot that is combed smoothly forward. A ball decorated with stylized birds and a feathered shuttlecock frame the battledore. A bold, beautifully detailed design.
