Onoe Kikujiro II as Kaoyo gozen, 1848

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Onoe Kikujiro II as Lady Kaoyo, the wife of Lord Hangan in the play "Chuko homare no takanawa," at the Nakamura Theater, a drama about the 47 ronin. She smiles sweetly as she pulls up the collars of her outer kimono, the fabric trailing on the floor around her feet. Her hair is simply arranged in a thick ponytail tied with a ribbon. Behind her, a black lacquer armrest sits atop a cushion trimmed with tassels at the corner. A charming design.
