Shipping Clerk and Frightened Wife, 1875

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of the shipping clerk Chugoro at bottom center grimacing with rage as he stares at his wife, holding a paper out with both hands. At right, Oyanagi leans back with an alarmed expression, cowering behind her kimono sleeve, clutching a black robe in her other hand. She stares up at Musashiya Tokubei, who regards her with a slight frown, one hand resting atop the hilt of his sword. At left, the older brother Gorozo scratches his head as he holds a pocketbook. Mosquito netting hangs behind the beauty, and a bold red and white checked pattern on the background adds dramatic impact. From left, the actors are Nakamura Nakazo III, Ichikawa Gonjuro I as Tokubei, Ichikawa Danjuro, and Iwai Hanshiro. Nice large expressive figures.
