Comments - Fantastic scene from the kabuki play "Hiragana Seisuiki" of the great warrior Higuchi no Jiro Kanemitsu, a retainer of the twelfth century Minamoto warrior Yoshinaka, perched in a rugged pine tree overlooking the ocean. After his Yoshinaka's death, Higuchi rescued his master's son and escaped disguised as the boatman Matsuemon. Here, the boatman uses the tree as a lookout, scowling unhappily as he spies Genji troops that are coming after him. A great dramatic portrait with a terrific setting.
