Demon Attacking Taira no Koremochi, 1887

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of a demon disguised as a princess, ready to attack a nobleman in the dance drama "Momijigari" (Maple Viewing). The actors are Ichikawa Sadanji as Taira no Koremochi and Ichikawa Danjuro as Princess Sarashina. While hunting deer, Koremochi met up with a group of beautiful women, including the young Princess Sarashina. Koremochi joined them in a picnic, then took a nap. As he was dozing off, he was visited by a messenger from the god of war who told him to be alert, draw his sword and slay one of the beauties, as she was a demon disguised as a beautiful woman. Here, Koremochi prepares to draw his sword as the witch raises a striped pole above her head to strike him, staring glassy-eyed at her victim. A waterfall rushes down the hillside behind him, and colorful maple leaves fall through the evening air. A great dramatic scene with vibrant color and a softly shaded night sky. Includes lacquer on the black areas of the beauty's obi.
