Comments - Interesting scene of beauties in front of the impressive modern steel Azuma Bridge over the Sumida River in Tokyo, which opened in 1887. The women and girls in the foreground wear the latest western fashions, with fitted bodices over full skirts, and gloves. The imposing structure dominates the scene at right, with boats on the river beyond and blossoming cherry trees on the far shore. At lower left, a small dog pauses to looks up at one of the women. A great image of the rapid changes taking place in Japan in the Meiji era.
