Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "Kiichi Hogen Sanryaku no Maki" at the Nakamura Theater in Edo. The elderly warrior Kiichi Hogen had written three books on battle strategy, and members of the warring Minamoto and Taira clans were both interested in obtaining his secrets. The young Ushiwakamaru (later Minamoto no Yoshitsune) of the Genji clan, has joined his household in disguise as the servant Torazo to obtain the books. He crouches at left, gripping a sword in one hand as Kiichi Hogen glares at him furiously, a feather fan in one hand and a scroll of his writings in the other. At right, his daughter, the Princess Minatsuru, has fallen in love with Torazo. From left, the actors are Iwai Kumesaburo II, Bando Mitsugoro II, and Segawa Kikunojo V. A great early design by Kunisada with expressive figures and an attractive setting.
