Gathering beside a Garden Pond, 1869 - Interesting kabuki scene of a group of men and women gathered in a room opening onto a garden with a pond. At bottom center, the sales clerk Seishichi looks out of the corners of his eyes with a sly grin at Omatsuya Sakuzo. Sakuzo in turn watches the beauty Obanaya Otsuyu in the center, a worried expression on his face, while Otsuyu suspiciously eyes the commoner standing at left. At right, a woman wears a striking kimono patterned with a large folding fan decorated with a peony above splashing waves, a similar fan in her hand. Paper lanterns frame a view of the garden beyond, with a stone lantern at left. From left, the actors include Nakamura Sagisuke, Nakamura Nakataro, and Onoe Kikugoro. Nice interaction between the figures.
