Equestrian Arts Club, 1872 - Fantastic depiction of an equestrian club demonstrating the art of horsemanship. At bottom foreground, men play dakyu a game with similarities to both polo and lacrosse. Dating back to the eight century, dakyu was popularized by the Shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune during the Edo era as excellent training for warfare. At right, a samurai rides his horse up the stairs, standing on its back. Above, men gallop along waving practice swords, each wearing a blue and white striped kimono tucked into green pants. The teams wear different colored capes on their helmets: purple and gray at left, and purple and white at right. A fun and colorful subject, rarely seen.
