Scene from Somewake tazuna, 1860

Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Somewake tazuna" at the Nakamura Theater of Kutsukake Hachizo, the leader of a group of packhorse drivers, chasing after his fellow driver Hinuka no Hachizo, his arms tucked inside his sleeves and folded across his chest. At left, Hinuka looks back with a worried frown, his arms also hidden beneath his tie-dyed shirt. A border of clouds separates the figures from the fenced courtyard of a mansion, with flowering cherry trees at right. From left, the actors are Kataoka Nizaemon VIII and Nakamura Fukusuke I. An unusual design, nicely detailed and shaded, with embossing on the light pink cherry blossoms in the background.
