Series; A Collection of Beautiful Tales of Valor (Seishin Bidan), 1894 - 1895

A Collection of Beautiful Tales of Valor - Published in 1894 - 1895 during the Sino-Japanese War, Gekko's handsome series "A Collection of Beautiful Tales of Valor" presents the heroic actions of men involved in this historic conflict. Each design focuses on one or more heroes, accompanied by a text panel in both Japanese and English. Images range from dramatic battle scenes and acts of espionage to quieter moment such as the transfer of command or a soldier paying respects at his brother's gravesite. Most men are identified by name. These terrific images are rendered in a very painterly style, with flowing line work and fine bokashi shading. Some include touches of burnishing or embossing, or a dusting of mica. This unusual series is rarely seen on the market, and is a wonderful choice for a student of military history or a collection interested in the Sino-Japanese War.
