On the Way to Kyoto, Minamoto Yorimitsu Meets Kaidomaru in the Ashigara Mountains of Sagami Province and Takes Him as a Retainer, circa 1837 - 1838 - Fantastic Kuniyoshi triptych depicting the young boy Kintaro attacking a black bear cub with an enormous ax, sending the animal tumbling over a cliff toward the rushing river below. His mother, the wild woman Yamauba, stands at left, a monkey sitting at her feet. The warrior Minamoto Tsuna watches Kintaro from the opposite bank at right, waving his fan, his bow in his other hand. After witnessing Kaidomaru's amazing strength, Minamoto no Yorimitsu took him as a retainer, renaming him Sakata no Kintoki. Geese fly through the sky and a couple of monkeys point to the scene from a cliff in the center. A spectacular natural setting with the rocky cliffs and the flowing river echoed by a line of softly shaded clouds. A great image from the life of the legendary Kintaro.
