A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction

Scene from Hiragana seisuiki, 1832 - Great kabuki scene from the play "Hiragana seisuiki" at the Ichimura Theater of Ichikawa Ebizo as Higuchi Jiro, a retainer of the twelfth century Minamoto warrior Yoshinaka. After Yoshinaka's death, Jiro rescued his master's son and escaped, disguised as the boatman Matsuemon. Here, the boatman perches in a pine tree to watch for rival Genji troops pursuing him, grimacing with rage. He wears a black kimono with a bold rope pattern over a blue shirt with a distinctive tie-dyed pattern favored by boatmen. Pine branches frame the evening sky behind him. Nicely compose and detailed.
