Original Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870 - 1949) Japanese Woodblock Print
Suma Beach, 1938

Tsuchiya Koitsu - After moving to Tokyo at age fifteen, Koitsu studied for many years with the woodblock artist Kobayashi Kiyochika. Known for his beautiful landscape prints with a dramatic use of light and shade, Koitsu was one of the leaders of the shin-hanga or new print movement in 20th century Japan.

Comments - Lovely view of Suma Beach on a moonlit night. A man walks along the shore carrying a parcel from a pole over his shoulder, casting a shadow on the sand as waves lap gently along the beach. The water shimmers with the reflection of a full moon high in the sky, the view framed by a sloping dune with pine trees in the foreground. Beautifully colored and shaded. The first time we've offered this subject.
