Fuji from Tago Bay, 1936 by Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870 - 1949)

Original Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870 - 1949) Japanese Woodblock Print
Fuji from Tago Bay, 1936

Tsuchiya Koitsu - After moving to Tokyo at age fifteen, Koitsu studied for many years with the woodblock artist Kobayashi Kiyochika. Known for his beautiful landscape prints with a dramatic use of light and shade, Koitsu was one of the leaders of the shin-hanga or new print movement in 20th century Japan.

Comments - Beautiful view of Mt. Fuji from Tago Bay, the peak reflected on the shimmering surface of the water below. The side of the mountain is shadowed in violet as the sun begins to rise, illuminating the snowy peak in yellow as a rosy glow spreads across the sky. A large pine tree frames the scene, with a small boat at right. Lovely handling of light and reflections in this attractive design.

Publisher - Doi, later edition from original blocks
