Harima, Moon over Akashi, Miyuki and Miyagi, No. 43 - Terrific illustration from the tale "Asagao nikki" (Diary of a Morning Glory), which tells the story of the lovely young Miyuki, who met and fell in love with the samurai Miyagi one night. She gave him a fan with a morning glory on it, and he wrote a verse for her about the blossoms. After parting, their ships passed at Akashi, the scene shown here. Miyuki later became blind after crying for her lost lover, eventually changing her name to Asagao (Morning Glory) and earning her living as a blind musician. The pair was finally reunited when Miyagi discovered her playing the koto at an inn. Here, the beauty stands on deck, watching as her lover's ship sails away, the fan still in her hand. An older woman kneels beside her, gesturing at the boat, a misty cloud drifting before the softly glowing full moon. The inset above shows Miyuki looking down at his sweetheart, surround by morning glories. An attractive design, nicely detailed with fine bokashi on the water and sky.
